How to Filter American News from Reddit (2026 Guide for Non-US Users)

Reddit's algorithm pushes US news to global users by default. Here's the 2-minute setup that filters American politics and news out of your Reddit feed — preset, subreddits, and the right extension.

Last updated May 25, 2026

To filter American news from Reddit in 2026, install Ultimate Reddit Filter, paste a US-centric keyword preset (politicians, agencies, state names, US news brands), and block the most US-heavy subreddits (r/news, r/politics, r/USNews). This wipes US-focused content from r/all and r/popular while leaving world, local, and niche subreddits intact.

TL;DR

  • Reddit’s r/all skews ~70% US-content by traffic — a frequent complaint from non-US users.
  • Install Ultimate Reddit Filter and apply both the keyword and subreddit preset below.
  • For maximum effect, also block US news brands (cnn, fox news, nyt, washington post).
  • This won’t filter your subscribed subreddits — just r/all, r/popular, and home feed mixed-in content.

Why r/all is so American

Reddit’s user base is roughly 50% US-based, but US users post and comment more, and US-political topics produce more engagement (the algorithm rewards engagement). The result: r/all and r/popular skew much further American than the user base alone would predict, especially during US election cycles.

If you live anywhere else and you’re tired of opening r/all to find five Trump posts, three “in this American state…” posts, and a Florida Man, this guide is for you.

The setup

1. Install Ultimate Reddit Filter

Free, Chrome + Firefox. Chrome Web Store · Firefox Add-ons.

2. Paste the American-news keyword preset

Extension icon → Keywords tab:

trump
maga
gop
dnc
white house
doj
scotus
congress
senate
house gop
vance
harris
biden
republican
democrat
republicans
democrats
us election
united states
us senate
us house
us supreme court
texas
florida
california
new york
chicago
los angeles
american
americans

Strip any term that’s too aggressive for your taste — new york will catch “New York Times” but also legitimate non-US posts mentioning the city. Adjust as needed.

3. Block US news brands

Add to the same keyword list:

cnn
fox news
msnbc
nyt
new york times
washington post
politico
breitbart
bloomberg us
ap news
npr
nbc news
abc news
cbs news

4. Block US-heavy subreddits

Subreddits tab:

r/politics
r/PoliticalDiscussion
r/PoliticalHumor
r/Conservative
r/news
r/USNews
r/Republican
r/Liberal
r/Florida
r/FloridaMan
r/PublicFreakout

Leave r/worldnews in — it’s actually mostly non-US.

5. Turn on comment filtering and reload

Settings → Filter comments too. Reload Reddit. r/all should now be drastically less American.

Better swaps

What to add to your subscriptions to fill the gap once American content is gone:

  • Country-specific subs — r/unitedkingdom, r/australia, r/canada, r/europe, r/india, r/southafrica.
  • r/worldnews for non-US news.
  • Local city subreddits.
  • Topic subs that aren’t politics — r/AskHistorians, r/programming, r/cooking.

What this won’t do

  • Won’t filter every American post. A post titled “I made this lamp” with no US markers in the title will get through. Most do.
  • Won’t filter your subscribed subreddits’ US content if you’re subscribed to US-focused subs.
  • Won’t work on the Reddit mobile app. Use Kiwi/Yandex (Android) or Orion (iOS) for mobile.

If it’s not working

  • Reload after every change. Filters are applied on page load.
  • If the US news brands are still appearing in titles (“CNN reports…”), check that the substring match is on (default).
  • For severe cases, step up to News Feed Eradicator — replaces the Reddit homepage entirely.

Reddit's algorithm uses engagement signals to rank posts in r/all and r/popular. US political content generates extremely high engagement — comments, upvotes, crossposting — which pushes it to the top globally regardless of where users are located. The only fix is a filter layer.
