How to Block Political Posts on Reddit (2026 Guide)

A complete 2-minute setup to wipe political content from your Reddit feed — keyword preset, subreddit blocks, and comment filtering, with the right extension.

Last updated May 25, 2026

To block political posts on Reddit in 2026, install Ultimate Reddit Filter, paste a politics keyword preset covering both US parties and major political figures, add the main political subreddits to the subreddit blocklist, and turn on comment filtering. Two minutes end-to-end. Reddit ships no native keyword filter — an extension is the only working approach.

TL;DR

  • Reddit has no built-in keyword filter — you need an extension.
  • Best tool: Ultimate Reddit Filter (free, Chrome + Firefox).
  • Combine keyword blocks + subreddit blocks + comment filtering for full coverage.
  • Copy-paste preset below; works on r/all, r/popular, and r/politics-adjacent subs.

Why Reddit’s own filters aren’t enough

As of May 2026, Reddit’s native filtering is limited to:

  • Muting individual subreddits.
  • A NSFW toggle.

There is no native keyword blacklist, no flair filter, no comment filter, no “hide all US politics” mode. Any working solution requires a browser extension.

The setup

1. Install the extension

Ultimate Reddit Filter — free, open source, actively maintained as of April 2026.

For a simpler one-toggle approach with a politics preset built in, see Reddit Keyword Filter instead.

2. Paste the politics keyword preset

Click the extension icon → Keywords tab → paste:

trump
maga
gop
dnc
white house
doj
scotus
congress
senate
house gop
vance
harris
biden
election
republican
democrat
republicans
democrats
politico
fox news
cnn
msnbc

These are substring matches — trump catches “Trump,” “trumpism,” “anti-Trump,” etc.

3. Add subreddit blocks

Subreddits tab → add:

r/politics
r/PoliticalDiscussion
r/PoliticalHumor
r/Conservative
r/Libertarian
r/news
r/worldnews
r/PoliticalCompassMemes
r/WhitePeopleTwitter
r/BlackPeopleTwitter

Adjust based on your taste. r/news and r/worldnews carry heavy political content; leave them in if you want non-political news, take them out if you don’t.

4. Turn on comment filtering

Settings tab → Filter comments too. This catches political subthreads under apolitical posts (the unavoidable r/AskReddit politics derail).

5. Reload and verify

Reload Reddit. Browse r/all for sixty seconds. If political content still appears, note which posts and add the missing terms to the keyword list.

Going nuclear

If keyword filtering still lets too much through (common during election cycles), step up to News Feed Eradicator. It removes the Reddit homepage feed entirely — you can still browse specific subreddits, post, and message, but r/all and r/popular are gone.

What this won’t do

  • Won’t block image-only political posts where the politics isn’t in the title. Subreddit blocks catch most of these.
  • Won’t work on the Reddit mobile app. The official app doesn’t support extensions. On Android use Kiwi or Yandex browser; on iOS use Orion.
  • Won’t stop Reddit’s algorithm from trying to serve you political content. It hides what arrives; it doesn’t change the upstream.

If it’s not working

  • r/all still political? Add more substring terms — gov, senate, house, names of specific officials currently in the news cycle.
  • Comments still political? Re-check that “Filter comments too” is on.
  • One specific topic leaking? The most common cause is missing variants — add trump 2028, maga rally, gop bill, etc.

What to do next

Install Ultimate Reddit Filter, paste the preset above, reload Reddit. Two minutes.

No. Reddit's native filters are limited to muting individual subreddits and a NSFW toggle. There is no keyword blacklist or topic filter built into Reddit as of 2026. A browser extension like Ultimate Reddit Filter is the only way to block political content by keyword.
