Best Reddit Enhancement Suite Alternatives in 2026 (RES Is Maintenance-Only)

Reddit Enhancement Suite has been in maintenance mode since 2022. Here are the actively maintained alternatives — with the right replacement for each RES feature you actually use.

Last updated May 26, 2026

Reddit Enhancement Suite has been in maintenance mode since 2022 — it still works in May 2026, but no new features are coming and its long-term reliability is uncertain. The best active replacement for RES's keyword filtering is Ultimate Reddit Filter — more capable filtering, actively maintained, free. For RES's non-filtering features (night mode, user tags, inline media), Reddit's native dark mode covers night mode; the rest has no single direct replacement.

TL;DR

  • RES entered maintenance mode in 2022. Two volunteers maintain it. No new features.
  • It still works in May 2026 — but for how much longer depends on Reddit’s pace of site changes.
  • For filtering: Replace with Ultimate Reddit Filter — better filtering, active development.
  • For night mode: Reddit’s native dark mode (Settings → Dark Mode) covers most users.
  • For user tags, inline media, other features: RES still works; no direct active replacement exists.
  • Best setup: Run Ultimate Reddit Filter (filtering) alongside RES (other features) if you need both.

What happened to RES?

Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) was built by a small volunteer team starting in 2010. At its peak, it was the most widely-installed Reddit extension, adding extensive customization to the stripped-back Reddit interface.

In 2022, the core development team announced that RES was entering official maintenance mode — development would continue only for critical bug fixes, not new features. The reasons cited: Reddit’s increasing pace of site changes making extension maintenance more difficult, and the maintainer team’s limited capacity.

As of May 2026, RES has two volunteer maintainers. The extension still functions for most of its features. The risk is forward-looking: when Reddit makes significant front-end changes (which it does periodically), RES may break faster than the small maintenance team can fix it.

The non-filtering features — user tags, inline media, keyboard shortcuts — have no actively-maintained replacements as of May 2026. If you rely on these, keeping RES installed alongside a better filtering tool is the current best approach.

Ultimate Reddit Filter — the filtering replacement

Ultimate Reddit Filter is the most actively maintained Reddit filtering extension in May 2026. Free and open source.

What it does better than RES for filtering:

Flair filtering. Ultimate Reddit Filter lets you block posts by their flair label — a feature RES has limited support for. Paste the exact flair text (e.g., “Discussion”, “Rant”, “Politics”) and posts with that flair are hidden across all subreddits.

Subreddit blocking. Block specific subreddits from appearing in r/all, r/popular, and your home feed — separate from your Reddit account’s mute list.

Comment filtering. Filter comment text containing your keyword list — not just post titles. RES’s filtering is primarily title-based.

Better new-Reddit compatibility. RES was built primarily for old Reddit and works less reliably on new Reddit’s React-based interface. Ultimate Reddit Filter was built with new Reddit support as a primary target.

Active development. New features and bug fixes continue to ship. The last update was April 2026.

Other active Reddit extensions worth knowing

Reddit Keyword Filterprofile. Simpler than Ultimate Reddit Filter — designed for users who want politics and drama filtered with minimal configuration. Comes with prebuilt keyword presets. No flair or subreddit filtering. Good for users who want one-tap activation without building a custom keyword list.

Unhook — Not a Reddit-specific tool, but Unhook removes the Reddit home feed entirely (among other platforms). For users who want to eliminate the algorithmic homepage rather than filter individual posts, Unhook is more effective than any keyword filter.

News Feed EradicatorNews Feed Eradicator replaces the Reddit home feed with a blank page. Nuclear option for users who want zero homepage algorithmic content.

If you use RES primarily for filtering: Uninstall RES. Install Ultimate Reddit Filter. Set up your keyword list. You’ll have better filtering with active maintenance.

If you use RES for filtering + other features (night mode, user tags, etc.): Keep RES installed for the non-filtering features. Install Ultimate Reddit Filter alongside it for filtering. The two don’t conflict — configure filtering in Ultimate Reddit Filter and ignore RES’s filtering features.

If you primarily use old Reddit: RES remains more reliable on old Reddit than new Reddit. Consider using old.reddit.com as your default if you want the full RES experience.

If night mode is your primary reason for having RES: Switch to Reddit’s native dark mode: Profile icon → Settings → Dark Mode. Uninstall RES.

Migration guide: moving your RES keyword list to Ultimate Reddit Filter

If you have a keyword list in RES, you can export it and import into Ultimate Reddit Filter:

Export from RES:

  1. Click the RES icon → Settings Console → Search for “filteReddit.”
  2. Copy your keyword list.

Import to Ultimate Reddit Filter:

  1. Open Ultimate Reddit Filter settings.
  2. Paste keywords in the Keywords tab, one per line.
  3. Save.

Your keyword list transfers. Flair and subreddit blocks need to be reconfigured — RES stores these differently from Ultimate Reddit Filter’s format.

Should you still install RES in 2026?

For new Reddit users who haven’t used RES before: skip it. Install Ultimate Reddit Filter for filtering and use Reddit’s native dark mode for dark mode. RES’s lifespan is uncertain and its maintenance-mode status makes it a poor foundation for a new setup.

For existing RES users who rely on features like user tags and keyboard shortcuts: keep it, but supplement with Ultimate Reddit Filter for filtering. Monitor the RES GitHub for any announcements about the project’s future.

RES is in official maintenance mode — not dead, but not actively developed. As of May 2026, RES still installs and functions for most features. Two volunteer maintainers ship occasional bug fixes. No new features have been added since 2022. The extension continues to work, but its long-term reliability is uncertain as Reddit continues updating its site.
