How to Filter Reddit on Mobile: iPhone and Android (2026)

Reddit's official apps don't support extensions. Here's the only working approach for keyword filtering on iOS and Android — with the browsers that actually run Chrome extensions on mobile.

Reddit's official iOS and Android apps don't support browser extensions. The only working mobile filtering approach: on Android, install Kiwi Browser and add Ultimate Reddit Filter inside it — your keyword list applies immediately. On iOS, Orion Browser runs Chrome extensions the same way. Both take under 5 minutes to set up. Filtering doesn't work inside the official Reddit app.

TL;DR

  • The official Reddit app (iOS and Android) does not support browser extensions. No workaround exists for filtering inside it.
  • Android: Kiwi Browser + Ultimate Reddit Filter. Free. Full desktop-equivalent filtering.
  • iOS: Orion Browser + Ultimate Reddit Filter. Free. Same result.
  • Your keyword list from the desktop extension can be exported and imported into the mobile setup.
  • Want to block Reddit on mobile instead of filtering it? Use Freedom or Opal instead.

Why the official Reddit app can’t be filtered

Browser extensions run inside a browser’s extension runtime — a sandboxed environment where the extension can intercept and modify page content. The official Reddit iOS and Android apps are native applications. They don’t have a browser extension runtime; they communicate directly with Reddit’s servers through their own code.

There is no mechanism for a browser extension to intercept traffic inside a native app. This isn’t a Reddit limitation — it’s a fundamental architecture difference between native apps and web pages.

The only solution is to use Reddit through a browser that supports extensions.

Android: Kiwi Browser + Ultimate Reddit Filter

Kiwi Browser is a Chromium-based Android browser that adds Chrome extension support — something the standard Chrome for Android app deliberately omits. It’s the most reliable approach for running browser extensions on Android.

Setup (under 5 minutes)

Step 1 — Install Kiwi Browser Download from the Google Play Store. Free.

Step 2 — Open the Chrome Web Store inside Kiwi Navigate to chrome.google.com/webstore inside Kiwi. Kiwi loads it as a full web page.

Step 3 — Install Ultimate Reddit Filter Search for “Ultimate Reddit Filter” and install it. The extension installs into Kiwi’s extension runtime exactly as it would in desktop Chrome.

Step 4 — Configure your keyword list Tap the menu icon (three dots) → Extensions → Ultimate Reddit Filter → Options. Or tap the extension icon in the toolbar. Paste your keyword list in the Keywords tab.

Step 5 — Use Reddit through Kiwi Navigate to reddit.com in Kiwi. Your keyword list is active. The filter works identically to the desktop version.

Other Android browsers that support Chrome extensions

  • Yandex Browser for Android — Russian-made, supports Chrome extensions. Works for filtering but raises privacy concerns for some users.
  • Firefox for Android (Fennec) — supports Firefox extensions including some Reddit filtering add-ons. Ultimate Reddit Filter is a Chrome extension; install RES or a Firefox-compatible equivalent instead.

iOS: Orion Browser + Ultimate Reddit Filter

Orion Browser by Kagi is the equivalent for iOS. It supports both Chrome extensions and Firefox extensions natively — a technically notable achievement given Apple’s extension restrictions.

Setup (under 5 minutes)

Step 1 — Install Orion Browser Download from the App Store. Free.

Step 2 — Enable extension support Orion prompts you to enable extension support during onboarding. Accept.

Step 3 — Install Ultimate Reddit Filter In Orion, navigate to chromewebstore.google.com. Search for “Ultimate Reddit Filter” and install it.

Step 4 — Configure Tap the extension icon inside Orion → Keywords tab → paste your list → Save.

Step 5 — Use Reddit through Orion Navigate to reddit.com in Orion. Filtering is active.

iOS alternative: Reddit Enhancement Suite via Firefox

Orion also supports Firefox extensions. If you prefer Firefox extensions, the Firefox version of Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) installs in Orion and provides keyword filtering through its filterline feature. Note that RES has been in maintenance mode since 2022.

Transferring your desktop keyword list to mobile

If you already have Ultimate Reddit Filter configured on desktop, you can export your keyword list and import it on mobile:

Export from desktop:

  1. Open Ultimate Reddit Filter on desktop.
  2. Click Settings → Export.
  3. Save the exported JSON file or copy the keyword list.

Import on mobile:

  1. Open Ultimate Reddit Filter inside Kiwi or Orion.
  2. Click Settings → Import → paste or upload your exported list.

Your full desktop keyword configuration — keywords, flair filters, subreddit blocks — transfers to mobile.

The limitation: Reddit’s mobile website vs. desktop site

By default, Reddit’s mobile website (m.reddit.com) has a simplified layout. Ultimate Reddit Filter works on both old.reddit.com and new Reddit (www.reddit.com). For the most consistent filtering experience on mobile, use www.reddit.com in your mobile browser and request the desktop site if needed.

In Kiwi: tap the menu → “Request desktop site” to force the full desktop Reddit layout.

When filtering isn’t enough on mobile

If your problem is compulsive opening of Reddit on your phone — not just the content you see — a content filter won’t fix it. You need to block access to Reddit on mobile entirely.

For iPhone: Opal blocks the Reddit app (and Safari access to reddit.com) at the system level with a hard lockout.

For iPhone + Android: Freedom syncs a block across all devices simultaneously. Configure once; your phone and laptop block Reddit at the same time.

See When Reddit Filtering Isn’t Enough for the full breakdown of when to switch from content filtering to access blocking.

Yes, but not in the official YouTube or Reddit app. Ultimate Reddit Filter is a browser extension — it runs inside Orion Browser on iOS, which supports Chrome extensions.
