How to Hide Promoted Tweets on Twitter/X (2026)
Twitter/X has no native toggle to disable ads. But uBlock Origin removes most of them automatically, and News Feed Eradicator removes the feed — and the ads — entirely.

Twitter/X has no free native ad toggle. Install uBlock Origin (free, Chrome and Firefox) — it removes most promoted tweets automatically with no configuration. Switch to the Following tab for a feed with fewer ad injection points. For complete feed removal (no ads, no algorithm), install News Feed Eradicator.

What Twitter/X actually lets you do about ads
Free options:
- Nothing natively. Twitter/X removed granular ad preference controls in 2023.
- “I don’t want to see this ad” on individual promoted tweets — removes that specific ad and signals preference, but doesn’t prevent future ads.
- uBlock Origin (browser extension, free) — removes most ad formats automatically.
Paid option:
- X Premium ($8/month or $84/year) — advertised as “half the ads.” Not zero ads, but noticeably fewer. Also includes other features (longer posts, blue checkmark, etc.).
uBlock Origin: the free solution
uBlock Origin is the most effective free tool for this. Install it, and most promoted tweets disappear automatically from the day you install it.
Install: Chrome Web Store | Firefox Add-ons
No configuration needed for Twitter/X ad blocking — the default filter lists handle it. Promoted tweets in the main feed and ad units in the sidebar disappear.
Why it works: uBlock Origin maintains and applies community-built filter lists that identify Twitter/X’s ad delivery patterns. When Twitter/X updates its ad format to evade blocking, the filter list updates within days. Keep the extension updated.
The Following tab: fewer ad surfaces
Switching from For You to Following at the top of your home screen doesn’t eliminate ads, but it significantly reduces the number of surfaces Twitter/X uses to insert them.
The For You feed is Twitter’s highest-ad-density zone — it interleaves promoted tweets between algorithmic recommendations. The Following feed is simpler and has less real estate for ad injection.
Combined with uBlock Origin, this gets you very close to an ad-free timeline.
News Feed Eradicator: remove the feed (and all its ads)
If your goal is to use Twitter/X for DMs, specific searches, or profile browsing without the timeline at all, News Feed Eradicator removes the Home feed. Promoted tweets live in the Home feed. No feed, no promoted tweets.
DMs, notifications, search, and profile pages remain fully functional.
Install News Feed Eradicator — free, Chrome and Firefox.
On mobile
uBlock Origin doesn’t work inside the Twitter/X iOS or Android app. Options on mobile:
- Use Twitter/X in Firefox for Android (supports extensions, including uBlock Origin).
- Pay for X Premium for in-app ad reduction.
- Use Freedom or Screen Time to limit total time in the Twitter/X app — reduces exposure to ads by reducing time in the app.
What to do next
- Install uBlock Origin (2 minutes). Most promoted tweets disappear immediately.
- Switch to the Following tab.
- If you want a completely ad-free experience, install News Feed Eradicator and access Twitter/X only through DMs, search, and profile browsing.

No native free toggle exists. Twitter Blue / X Premium ($8/mo or $84/yr as of 2026) significantly reduces ads — the paid tier is advertised as 'half the ads' rather than no ads. For free ad removal, uBlock Origin with its default filter lists removes most promoted tweets automatically without any configuration.
