How to Hide Political Posts on Facebook (2026)

Stop the political arguments without unfriending anyone. Four methods — from Facebook's own settings to a browser extension — that actually reduce what you see.

Last updated May 27, 2026

To reduce political posts on Facebook: go to Settings → Feed → turn on 'Reduce political and social content', then unfollow the people and pages generating the most political posts in your feed. For complete removal, install News Feed Eradicator (free browser extension) — it removes the feed entirely, which eliminates political content by default.

Why this is harder than it should be

You’re on Facebook to see photos of your grandchildren, keep up with a community group, and maybe stay in touch with old friends. You’re not there for arguments about politicians you’ll never meet.

Facebook doesn’t make it easy to separate the two. There’s no “politics off” switch. The platform’s engagement systems are specifically tuned to surface high-emotion content — which means political arguments travel further and stick around longer than a photo of someone’s garden.

But there are real options. Here’s what actually works in 2026.

Method 1: Facebook’s built-in “Reduce political content” setting

Facebook added a setting to reduce political and social content in your feed. It’s not prominent — you have to go looking for it.

How to turn it on:

  1. Click your profile picture (top right on desktop, or the menu icon on the app).
  2. Go to Settings & privacy → Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Feed.
  4. Find “Reduce political and social content” and click to enable it.

What this does: Reduces how often Facebook’s algorithm shows you political content from pages and people you don’t follow. Posts from accounts you actively follow are not affected by this setting.

What this doesn’t do: It won’t stop friends and family from posting political content that appears in your feed. For that, you need Method 2.

Method 2: Unfollow the people posting it most

The cleanest solution for posts from people you know: unfollow them. They stay on your friends list. They receive no notification. You simply stop seeing their posts.

How to unfollow from a post:

  1. See a political post in your feed.
  2. Click the three dots (···) in the top-right corner of the post.
  3. Select “Unfollow [Name]”.

How to unfollow from their profile:

  1. Go to their profile.
  2. Click the Friends button.
  3. Select Unfollow.

Do this for 5–10 of the most active political posters in your feed. Most people find this resolves the majority of the problem in under 10 minutes.

You can re-follow anyone at any time from their profile. There’s no record kept of who you’ve unfollowed, and no notification is ever sent.

Method 3: Use “Show less” on political pages

If political content is coming from pages (news sources, political organizations, causes) rather than personal friends, use the “Hide post” and “Show less like this” options:

  1. Click the three dots (···) on the post.
  2. Select “Hide post” (removes this post) or “Show less like this” (tells Facebook to reduce this type of content).

For a page you don’t want to see at all:

  1. Click the three dots (···) on any of their posts.
  2. Select “Unlike page” or “Unfollow page”.

Note: Unfollowing or unliking a page is also silent. The page administrator doesn’t see individual follower activity.

Method 4: News Feed Eradicator — remove the feed entirely

If Methods 1–3 reduce the noise but don’t eliminate it, News Feed Eradicator is the complete solution.

It’s a free browser extension that replaces your Facebook news feed with an inspirational quote. The entire feed disappears — political posts, Reels, suggested content, all of it. What remains: Messenger, groups, events, your profile, and notifications. Every part of Facebook that involves actually doing something, without the scroll.

Install it for 30 days and see if you miss the feed. Most people find they miss specific people’s updates — which they can get by visiting those people’s profiles directly — but don’t miss the feed itself at all.

A note on why this matters beyond annoyance

Facebook’s algorithm doesn’t just show you political content — it shapes which political content you see, and how you feel about it. Content that generates strong emotional reactions (anger, outrage, fear) spreads further and faster in the feed than content that doesn’t. This isn’t a conspiracy; it’s an optimization for engagement.

The result is that your feed’s political content tends toward the most extreme positions and the angriest takes, even if the people you follow aren’t primarily extreme or angry.

Filtering or removing political content from your feed isn’t about avoiding reality. It’s about choosing where and how you want to engage with it.

What to do next

  1. Turn on Feed → Reduce political and social content (takes 2 minutes, helps somewhat).
  2. Spend 10 minutes scrolling your feed and unfollowing the 5 loudest political posters.
  3. If the feed is still a problem after a week, install News Feed Eradicator and try a month without it.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions — click any to expand.

No. As of 2026, Facebook does not offer a toggle to completely remove political content from your feed. The 'Reduce political and social content' setting in Feed Preferences reduces the frequency but doesn't eliminate it. For complete removal, a browser extension like News Feed Eradicator (which removes the entire feed) or strategic unfollowing of the sources generating political content is the most effective approach.
