Unbypassable Website Blockers That Actually Work in 2026
Most website blockers can be bypassed in under 30 seconds. These can't. Cold Turkey, SelfControl, and Freedom's Locked Mode tested against every common bypass attempt.
Last updated May 26, 2026
The only website blockers that cannot be bypassed in 2026 are system-level tools: Cold Turkey on Mac/Windows (the block survives uninstalls and restarts), SelfControl on Mac (network-level, genuinely unremovable during the timer), and Freedom's Locked Mode (cross-device, cannot be ended by the account holder mid-session). Browser extension blockers are bypassable by switching browsers — they are not in this category.

TL;DR
- Browser extension blockers (StayFocusd, LeechBlock): bypassable in 10 seconds by opening a different browser.
- System-level blockers (Cold Turkey, SelfControl, Freedom): genuinely unbypassable by the user during the session.
- Most “unbypassable” blockers found through a quick search are browser extensions — they are not actually unbypassable.
- For a true hard block on Mac/Windows: Cold Turkey (paid, $39 once) or SelfControl (free).
- For cross-device including iPhone: Freedom Locked Mode.
Why most blockers are bypassed in under 30 seconds
Most people who’ve tried distraction blocking have a story about bypassing their own blocker when the urge was strong enough. The common bypass methods:
- Open a different browser (bypasses Chrome extensions on Firefox, etc.)
- Open incognito/private mode (bypasses some extension configs)
- Disable the extension in browser settings (10 seconds)
- Open the blocker’s settings and remove the site (30 seconds)
- Uninstall the app (bypasses lightweight apps)
- Restart the device (bypasses session-state tools)
A genuinely unbypassable blocker must survive all of these. The test is simple: can you access the blocked site within 5 minutes by trying each method above? If yes, the blocker is bypassable.
The bypass test: how each tool performs
| Bypass method | Browser extension | Cold Turkey | SelfControl | Freedom Locked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open different browser | ✗ Bypasses | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked |
| Incognito mode | ✗ Often bypasses | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked |
| Disable extension | ✗ Bypasses | N/A | N/A | N/A |
| Uninstall app | ✗ Bypasses | ✓ Block persists | ✓ Block persists | ✓ Block persists |
| Restart device | ✗ Often resets | ✓ Block resumes | ✓ Block persists | ✓ Block resumes |
| VPN | ✗ May bypass | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked |
| Change DNS | ✗ Bypasses | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked | ✓ Blocked |
| End session early | — | ✓ Cannot (active block) | ✓ Cannot | ✓ Cannot (Locked) |
Only system-level blockers pass the full test.
Cold Turkey — most configurable unbypassable blocker
Cold Turkey is the only blocker as of May 2026 that can lock you out of your entire computer — not just websites. The free tier provides basic website blocking. Pro ($39 one-time) unlocks the features that make it genuinely extreme:
How Cold Turkey achieves unbypassability
Cold Turkey registers a system service that modifies Windows and macOS network routing rules. These rules persist at the OS level — they’re not stored inside the Cold Turkey app. When you uninstall Cold Turkey, the routing rules remain in place. When you restart your machine, the rules reload from the system (not from Cold Turkey’s app process).
The only way to remove an active Cold Turkey block is:
- Wait for the timer to expire.
- On Windows: boot into Safe Mode and manually remove the hosts entries (this takes technical knowledge and 10+ minutes — the impulse has usually passed).
- On Mac: similar effort required via Terminal.
Frozen Turkey
Frozen Turkey is Cold Turkey’s most extreme mode. It locks you out of the entire computer — no apps, no settings, no file manager, just a fullscreen countdown. You cannot do anything on the machine until the timer expires. It looks like this: [your wallpaper, a countdown, nothing else].
Use case: when you’ve identified that you need a hard stop and you want the machine to enforce it without any room for negotiation.
Allowance system
Cold Turkey Pro can enforce a time budget: “Allow 20 minutes of Reddit per day, then block it for the rest of the day.” The allowance depletes as you use it and the block engages automatically when the budget hits zero. No other blocker in this category offers this.

SelfControl — free unbypassable Mac blocker
SelfControl achieves genuine unbypassability for Mac website blocking at zero cost.
How SelfControl achieves unbypassability
SelfControl modifies the macOS packet filter (pf) firewall — a low-level OS component — to drop all network traffic to the specified domains. The modification persists in the system firewall configuration, not in SelfControl’s app data. When the SelfControl app is deleted, the firewall rule remains because it was written to the OS, not to the app.
The timer is managed by a separate background daemon. When you restart the Mac, the daemon restarts and enforces the remaining timer duration. There is no user-accessible way to remove the rule before the timer expires.
Verified bypass resistance:
sudo defaults delete org.eyebeam.SelfControl— doesn’t work mid-session.- Deleting the SelfControl app — block persists.
- Restarting the Mac — block resumes.
- Flushing the DNS cache — doesn’t help, block is at the packet filter level.
- Opening a different browser — blocked, the rule is OS-level.
Limitations: No scheduling, no Windows, no mobile, blocks websites only (not desktop apps).
Download SelfControl — free, Mac only.
Freedom Locked Mode — best for cross-device unbypassable blocking
Freedom achieves unbypassability through a different mechanism: server-side session management.
When a Locked session is active, Freedom’s servers hold the session state. The Freedom app on your devices enforces the block based on the server state. Ending the session early requires contacting Freedom’s support team — you cannot do it yourself through any app or dashboard action during the session.
On iOS: Freedom installs a VPN profile. The VPN profile intercepts all network traffic and routes it through Freedom’s servers, which block specified domains. The VPN profile cannot be easily removed during a Locked session because Freedom’s iOS app prevents profile deletion while a session is running.
On Mac/Windows: Freedom installs a system service similar to Cold Turkey’s approach.
The cross-device advantage: A Locked session started from your Mac simultaneously locks your iPhone. You cannot reach for your phone and find Reddit accessible while your Mac session is running.
Trade-off: Subscription pricing. Freedom is not a one-time purchase. Over five years, it costs $200+ at sale price vs. $39 for Cold Turkey’s lifetime license.

What doesn’t qualify as “unbypassable”
These tools are commonly recommended as strict blockers but can be bypassed with minor effort:
StayFocusd (Chrome extension): Has a Nuclear option that blocks the settings page, but can be bypassed by opening Firefox, or by going to chrome://extensions and disabling it before the Nuclear option takes effect.
LeechBlock NG (Firefox/Chrome extension): Has a lockdown mode that prevents changing rules during a block, but switching browsers bypasses it entirely.
iOS Screen Time self-limits: A single tap on “Ignore Limit” bypasses the block immediately.
RescueTime FocusTime: RescueTime’s blocking feature (included in the paid tier) can be disabled from the RescueTime desktop app during a session. It’s a productivity enhancer, not a hard blocker.
Recommendation by situation
| Situation | Tool | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mac only, want free | SelfControl | Unbypassable, no account, zero cost |
| Mac only, want scheduling + allowances | Cold Turkey Pro | $39 once, strictest features |
| Mac + iPhone, need both blocked | Freedom Locked Mode | Cross-device sync, server-side session |
| Windows only | Cold Turkey | Same product, Windows version |
| Max strictness — whole computer lockout | Cold Turkey Frozen Turkey | Nothing else does this |
